This article covers how to connect using Putty to a Linux Server.
1. If you haven't already, download the latest version of PuTTY from [http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/]. In case you had trouble finding the link to download the software, click here for the download link.
2. After the Software has finished downloading, click on the "putty.exe" executable. You will receive the following warning message.
Proceed by clicking the "Run" button.
3. In the field "Host Name (or IP address)" you may input your username@hostname or username@IP.ad.dre.ss. If you are the administrator of a VPS or Dedicated Server with us, your username will be root and you will need to update the "Port" field to 1891 (VPS) or 1157 (Dedicated Server) (or the port you specified upon setting up your server).
If you are attempting to connect to your server using SSH and you have a Shared or Reseller account, you will need to make a request through the help desk for Jailed Shell Access before you will be able to connect through SSH.
If you connect using Jailed Shell Access, you will use your cPanel username instead of root, and you will need to update the "Port" field to 1291. Your access to ssh will be limited to your hosting account.
Note: 22 is the default port for SSH

After you have input the username and IP address or Hostname, click the "Open" button.
4. A terminal window will open and you will receive another prompt asking your accept the server's certificate. Click the "Yes" button.
Note: You should only after accept this certificate once, all future connections will reference the certificate in your registry that you had accepted.).
A prompt will now appear in the terminal window asking you for your password. Input the password for the username you had specified and press the "Enter" key.
Note: The password will not appear on screen as you type it in the field, this is normal and is a security measure to prevent people behind you from viewing your password while it is being entered.
After entering the correct password you will receive a command line prompt.
You have now successfully connected through SSH!
